Dr Claire Hayes is a Senior Lecturer in Nursing and Midwifery at a Melbourne university and a mental health nurse with more than 15 years of clinical experience across adolescent, adult, and acute mental health settings. She is a research-active academic specialising in youth mental health, inpatient models of care, domestic and family violence, simulation-based nursing education, and the mental health needs of vulnerable populations.

Dr Hayes brings extensive expertise in psychiatric nursing, mental health service delivery, trauma-informed practice, and the psychosocial impacts of violence and abuse. Her research has been published in leading Q1 journals and has informed service design, risk assessment, models of care, and mental health nursing education.

With a career spanning clinical leadership roles including Nurse Unit Manager, Associate Nurse Unit Manager, and Registered Nurse positions. Dr Hayes has developed deep expertise in clinical decision-making, risk assessment, organisational governance, and professional standards of care. She has led and contributed to national and international research projects, including funded evaluations of community safety programs, domestic violence initiatives, and mental health education interventions.

Dr Hayes is regularly invited to present her work at national and international conferences. She serves as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Nursing. Her combined clinical, academic, and research experience positions her as a highly qualified expert witness in matters involving mental health nursing practice, standards of care, risk assessment, trauma, domestic and family violence, adolescent mental health, and organisational practice within health services.
