Five courts have appointed Dr. Will as an impartial referee and expert witness because of his balance between plaintiff and defendant work and 35 years of experience in automotive product development and -research. Law firms from 4 continents have retained Dr. Will, often together with 10 of his associates who can support e-discovery in English, German, Japanese, Mandarin, Spanish, French, Hindi, and Marathi. Most of his cases have settled shortly after his reports have been handed down, often even just after revealing his proposed test plan. That minimised the expenses for discovery, depositions, and trials. He holds over 30 granted patents some of which have been implemented by over 10 vehicle manufacturers.
His expert witness experience includes disputes related to vehicle emission defeat devices, energy- / fuel efficiency & range, defects of engines & transmissions, carbon monoxide poisoning, vehicle fires, sudden unintended accelerations, phantom braking & -steering, trade secret misappropriation and patent infringement. During his 5 years as full-time university lecturer his student’s rated him 5 out of a maximum of 5 for student satisfaction while he completed his PhD part time in 3 years and running is patent licensing company Ino8 Pty Ltd.
In 2016 he prepared an analysis for a defendant to save multi-billions of dollars. In 2018, he was the lead expert witness in a case that resulted in a $120M settlement for his plaintiff clients only 4 weeks after his report about the defendants’ expert report was handed down; His reports in another case resulted in a landmark judgement for clients worth up to $2B. A further client saved millions of dollars that otherwise would have been spent on a class action without merits. While working for Ford Motor Company, he applied his failure analysis and troubleshooting skills to discover many design- and manufacturing defects and implemented affordable solutions before mass production started to prevent recalls.
Dr. Will has invented, designed, built, and licenced automotive products such as heat management systems and engine software strategies that reduce emissions and fuel consumption. He has conducted extensive research in the reduction of emissions and improvement of vehicle efficiency, with applications to automotive control systems, and semi-active suspension systems. He is a Fellow of the Society of Automotive Engineers Australasia and was honoured with many awards in different countries. Besides a PhD in Automotive Engineering, he holds an MBA, a German Dipl. Ing, the MSc equivalent in Mechanical Engineering with focus on Power Engineering, and a Graduate Certificate in Higher Education.
For over 20 years he competed in professional motorcycle racing, starting with trials over grass track to moto cross, super cross and Enduro, so he is also very experienced with specific accidents and injuries of any two-wheeler and other off-road vehicles.
