Professor Patrick Murray is an experienced aviation professional who can offer a broad international perspective gained from senior roles in academia and the military, as well as a major international airline and a government safety regulator. He supervises doctoral research and is considered a thought leader in aviation safety and education, specializing in human performance in aviation as well as other high skill / high consequence industries.
Patrick is a highly experienced military and civilian pilot having held airline transport pilot licences in Australia, the UK and Hong Kong. He has accumulated over 16,000 hours as a pilot and has held flight instructor and flight examiner ratings on aircraft types ranging from the Boeing 747 to gliders and ultra-light aircraft.
A graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, Patrick holds or has held board membership and chair positions in several Australian and international organisations. These include a Governor General appointment to the Australian Government Veterans’ Review Board and an appointment as the inaugural Chair of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) Aviation Safety Advisory Panel, formed to provide strategic advice to the CASA CEO and Director of Aviation Safety. In 2021, the Deputy Prime Minister appointed Patrick to Chair a select committee to provide advice to the Federal Government on the future of Australia’s aviation industry during the recovery from COVID-19 and beyond. Patrick has published widely and has been an invited chair and keynote speaker at international conferences in aviation and his expertise and industry contributions have been recognized through international awards, and Fellowships of The Royal Aeronautical Society, The Institute of Managers and Leaders, and The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport. He is a qualified accident investigator, and in 2022 he was appointed as a Life Member of the International Society of Air Safety Investigators.
