Simon Smith is an independent expert witness and digital forensic investigator with more than two decades of experience in information technology, cybersecurity and software development and engineering. His career began in programming and systems analysis, where he worked across full software development life cycles, database design, API and SDK integration and complex enterprise systems. He later founded an international software development business and created commercial software used in medical and legal industries.

Simon expanded into forensic investigation and cybersecurity, combining technical depth with formal investigation training. He developed strong capability in digital forensics, cybercrime investigations, blockchain analysis, mobile device forensics, AI & artificial intelligence, cyber stalking investigations and carriage service offences. His work includes analysing encrypted platforms, reverse engineering software behaviour and conducting detailed examinations of digital evidence. He provides independent expert reports that have been tendered in many civil and criminal matters and often formally accepted into evidence, and he has appeared in court as an expert witness.

He has expertise in interpreting telecommunications cell tower evidence, including Call Data Records (CDRs), SMS logs, cell tower locations, and Event-Based Metadata (EBM). His reports have helped courts understand the limits and reliability of mobile network records and correct common misinterpretations around timing and location.

He also has deep experience with wearable technology, multimedia content, and secure messaging platforms such as Threema, ANØM, ANOM, Session, EncroChat, SnapChat, Kik, Ghost, Cypher, SkyECC, Phantom Secure, Wickr, Signal, Telegram, WhatsApp, Conversations.im (XMPP), and custom OMEMO-encrypted XMPP systems.
